Hair Extensions for short hair, everything you need to know….

If you are wondering, “Can I use hair extensions if I have short hair?” or “what type of hair extensions work best for short hair?”  Don’t stress, everything you need to know is covered in this blog... so keep reading!

Firstly, how short is your hair? If it’s sitting below your collarbone or shoulders, you're in luck! Your hair stylist will be able to create length using almost any type of hair extensions. However, for all lengths shorter (above the collarbone) we recommend using Tape extensions.

Why Tape? Tape extensions are lightweight & sit super flat against the scalp.

When you have short hair or layers your stylist may need to apply the extensions close to your part or hair-line to ensure all of your natural hair blends well with your new extensions, which can be easily done with Tape extensions. Other extension methods like Wefts, Keratin Bonds or I-tips tend to be more bumpy and/or bulky which has a habit of sticking out like a sore thumb in short hair, especially as short hair usually separates easily.

The next thing to think about is - “How much hair will I need?”
We often hear the term “A full head of extensions”, but how much hair is a ‘full head’?

Across the industry a standard ‘full head’ is usually 100 grams of hair. However, what a lot of people don’t realise is that 100 grams is actually the minimum amount of hair needed to create a full head. In your case, short hair/layers need to be filled which 90% of the time can only be done using between 150-200grams worth of hair.

Last but not least, cutting your extensions; this is something that is usually overlooked, but can really make a huge difference between your extensions looking natural or fake! 🙊

For example - if you have 22 inch hair extensions applied in your hair, but your shortest layers around your ears, this hairstyle may feel a little disconnected, or almost scrape the surface of mullet vibes (which we can confirm is not on trend this season😉 ).  Instead opt to have a few inches cut off your extensions the first time round, to create a natural length or maybe some soft layers in the extension to connect your short natural hair layers with your extensions better - this will always help you to achieve a seamless & natural result.

To round up your questions in a nutshell, YES hair extensions are definitely achievable on short hair! Just keep these pro tips in mind, always book with an experienced hair extension specialist & you will have your dream hair in no time.
